U.S. Missle Defense Agency (MDA), Sep: 2008:

I wish to express my appreciation for the excellent support by your organization in supporting me during our Ballistic Missile Defense Multinational Conference in Hawaii, 6-12 September 2008.  The support we received from your staff was outstanding!  The Conference is a gathering of over 21 countries with roughly 850 delegates.  We have held these conferences all over the world. Last year we convened in the Netherlands and next year we will meet in France.  Your superb staff support contributed immeasurably to the success of our participation at the conference. Continued...

Garvey and Gramann, May 2000:

"We've long been fans of Charley's Taxi --- not just because they get us to the airport in fine style when we need to go there, but because they really understand the BIG idea behind the power of the brand. Run by three generations of strong women (we like that, too!), Charley's has spent more time than any transportation company we know understanding what its customer wants and delivering it. Charley's drivers all go through a training program developed by Dale Evans, and there are written standards of cleanliness, honesty, behavior and dress that are strictly observed. That's why Charley's has won prestigious contracts like Hilton Hawaiian Village's and Aloha Tower's.  At those places and others around town, you'll see Charley's drivers with their late model cars, spiffed out in clean white shirts, bright red ties and big friendly smiles. That's also why Charley's repeatedly wins awards from the visitor industry and others.

Dale Evans, her mother Helen Morita, and her daughter Darci know that inside/out delivery of consistent, excellent services translates into a powerful brand.

As Darci wrote, "If you're ever in the vicinity of Foodland Ala Moana some afternoon, you may see my grandmother, who is 86 dispatching taxis from her car. It's actually pretty cute. As Ala Moana Shopping Center is upgrading and expanding, the traffic there has been horrendous, making it more difficult for taxis to get in and cover the stand...so to ensure that customers get speedier service, Grandma will watch the stand from her car and either cell phone the dispatchers or radio taxis in. (Now that's what I call service)." Our hats we never wear are off to Helen Morita, her daughter Dale Evans and her granddaughter, Darci.: Three women who really understand the power of the brand!"

Passing:

Charley's Taxi co-founder dies at 94 - Helen Morita (1913-2008), slight of build and always wearing a twinkle in her eye, was an imposing figure of business transportation as these links testify:

Topix: Helen Hifumi Morita set the pace

Star Bulletin: Helen among first women leaders in U.S. transportation history

Helen Morita is survived by a sister; two daughters; a son; eight grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

'Auntie Myrtle' recalls her days as a singing taxi driver
(from The Honolulu Advertiser, January 18, 2002)
By Wade Kilohana Shirkey, Advertiser Staff Writer

Seems like a no-brainer: Hawaiian music in the taxis that ferry tourists from the airport to Waikiki. For Charley's Taxi, it was a recent, innovative concept. In an effort to build ridership while paying tribute to Hawai'i's musical heritage, Charley's signed up with Mountain Apple, a company based in Honolulu that records many well-known Hawai'i entertainers, and arranged to play the company's titles. From the Honolulu Advertiser 1/6/2002 - "The well-dressed man led the frail little lady to the car. He made sure she was safe inside, smiled at her, closed the door, folded up the walker and put it in the trunk. As they pulled away, I got a better look at the car. It was a Charley's taxi. That man wasn't her son at all. He was a medicab driver.... Sure, the cab driver was being paid to walk the woman to her car, but it was the way he did it, with care and good humor, that was so amazing to witness." Click here to read the entire article...

When Cabs Come Clean As A Whistle
Hawaiian Village, Charley's roll out their best image
(reprint from The Honolulu Advertiser, February 20, 1995)
By Stu Glauberman, Advertiser Tourism Writer

Only 60 of the newest and shiniest of 250 Charley's Taxis are good enough to pick up guests at the Hawaiian Village Hotel. Taxi drivers working the Hawaiian Village concession are responsible for making sure their cars sparkle inside and out, carpets are vacuumed and the seats have clean, white cotton head-rest covers.
